The Strait of Hormuz 'briefly opened' and closed again!

2026-04-09

On April 8, according to Iran's news television, the Strait of Hormuz has been completely closed, and some ships were forced to turn back. A large number of vessels are still stranded in the waters near the strait. This occurred less than 24 hours after Iran conditionally opened the strait following a U.S.-Iran ceasefire.

Maritime agency analysis shows that within 24 hours after the U.S.-Iran ceasefire, 7 ships passed through the strait. The shipowners are from China and Greece, and they took the so-called Iranian coastal toll route rather than the conventional central channel of the strait.

According to ShipView, a vessel tracking service under COSCO Shipping Technology, the tanker AUROURA, originally heading towards the exit of the strait, suddenly changed course in the early morning of the 9th, making a 180-degree turn back into the Persian Gulf.

On April 8, Iranian Parliament Speaker Qalibaf issued a statement, saying that the U.S. had previously called Iran's ten-point plan a feasible basis for negotiations, but talks had not yet begun, and three key terms had already been violated. In the context of the negotiation basis being openly violated, advancing a ceasefire or conducting negotiations is entirely unreasonable.
Specifically: first, the ceasefire provision in Lebanon was violated, as Israel launched a fierce airstrike on Lebanon that day; second, a drone intruded into Iranian airspace and was shot down over Lar city in Fars Province; third, the U.S. refused to recognize Iran's right to enrich uranium.

Meanwhile, in the early morning of April 9, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy issued a statement announcing a secure alternative route map for the Strait of Hormuz, advising ships to avoid potential anti-ship mines in the main channel and requiring all vessels to coordinate with the Revolutionary Guard Navy before passing through.
